VMU: Lithuania's 1,150 Free Forest Retreats

The Lithuanian State Forest Enterprise (VMU) maintains 1,150 public recreation facilities — cognitive trails, campsites, rest areas and viewpoints — accessible free of charge across Lithuania's 1.1 million hectares of state forest.

VMU: Lithuania's 1,150 Free Forest Retreats

Lithuania's forests cover a third of the country's land area, and the state-owned portion — 1.1 million hectares managed by VMU (Valstybinių miškų urėdija, the State Forest Enterprise) — is entirely open to the public. What makes the Lithuanian system remarkable is its density of maintained infrastructure: VMU manages 1,150 public recreation facilities, from full campsites to simple viewpoints, all of them free to use.

The facilities span the full range: cognitive (educational) trails with information boards, designated campsites with fire rings, rest areas with picnic tables, observation towers and platforms, and arborial spaces like the Dubrava Arboretum near Kaunas — a research forest with centuries-old specimen trees open for public walking.

What You'll Find

VMU's recreation map (available at vmu.lt/en/recreation) shows all facilities with brief descriptions and photos. Categories include:

  • Cognitive trails — marked routes through forest with interpretation boards covering ecology, forest management, and local history. Latvia's Varnikai trail in Trakai district and the Lakštingalų valley park in Tauragė district are among the most-visited.
  • Campsites — designated areas with fire rings, usually near rivers or lake edges. No booking required; open year-round.
  • Observation decks — wooden platforms and towers at forest high points. The Samogitian Plateau in western Lithuania and the Aukštaitija lake district in the northeast have the highest concentrations.
  • Rest areas — simple shelters with picnic infrastructure, distributed throughout the forest road network.

Forest Rules for Campervan Travellers

In Lithuania, all citizens (and visitors) have the right to enter state forests. Camping is permitted only in designated areas — not free wild camping. Driving motor vehicles into the forest is restricted to forest roads. Fires are only permitted in designated metal fire rings; never on the forest floor. These rules are standard across the Baltic region and strictly enforced during dry periods (April–September) when fire season declarations are common.

Regional Highlights

The richest VMU recreation areas are concentrated in three zones: Aukštaitija National Park (northeast Lithuania — chain of blue lakes in birch and pine forest), Dzūkija National Park (southeast — mushroom and berry forest typical of inland Lithuania), and the Samogitian National Park (west — rolling hills, small lakes, medieval hill forts). None require entry fees.
