Forest Therapy in Lithuania: Walking the Cognitive Trails of the State Forest

VMU Lithuania is formally introducing forest therapy — a science-backed practice of mindful forest immersion — across its 1,150-facility recreation network. Here's where to find the best forest trails for well-being.

Forest Therapy in Lithuania: Walking the Cognitive Trails of the State Forest

In June 2024, VMU — the Lithuanian State Forest Enterprise — formally began implementing forest therapy across its recreation network. The programme is built on scientific evidence that time spent in forests measurably reduces cortisol levels, lowers blood pressure, and improves immune function through exposure to phytoncides and mycelial aerosols. Lithuania, with its dense state forest coverage and established network of cognitive trails, is well positioned to offer this systematically.

Forest therapy (known internationally as "Shinrin-yoku" or forest bathing, originating in Japan) differs from hiking in that the goal is not distance or exercise but sensory engagement with the forest environment. Guided sessions are now offered at select VMU sites, but the framework is equally useful for independent travellers moving through Lithuania by motorhome.

Best Forests for Mindful Walking

Aukštaitija National Park, Northeast Lithuania

The chain of lakes and interconnecting pine-birch forest in Aukštaitija is Lithuania's most serene landscape. The cognitive trails here are quiet even in high summer, and the forest is layered — tall pines above, birch at mid-height, fern and bilberry on the floor. The silence is notable: low human activity, high bird density. VMU maintains multiple rest shelters and fire rings throughout the park.

Dzūkija National Park, Southeast Lithuania

Dzūkija is Lithuania's largest national park and most forested, covering 55,000 hectares of ancient pine-dominated woodland on sandy soils above the Nemunas and Ūla rivers. It's the mushroom-picking capital of the Baltics — in late summer, the forest floor is covered with chanterelles, porcini, and birch boletes. Walking through Dzūkija in August is a full sensory event: resin, damp soil, needle-cushioned tracks.

Samogitian Plateau, Western Lithuania

Western Lithuania's hills contain some of the country's oldest continuously forested land. VMU cognitive trails here combine forest walking with cultural heritage — you'll pass old farm clearings returning to forest, rural chapels, and long-abandoned charcoal production sites. The highest terrain in Lithuania is in Šiauliai County, where ridgeline walks offer views across the flat plateau.

Practical Notes

Most VMU cognitive trails are marked with waymarks and have information boards at the trailhead. The VMU recreation map at vmu.lt includes descriptions in Lithuanian; Google Maps works for navigation to most sites. For phoneless navigation, the AllTrails app has coverage for the major Baltic national parks.

Peak season is June–August. Spring (May) and early autumn (September) offer the most atmospheric conditions — morning mist in the forest, minimal crowds, moderate temperatures. Fire season restrictions apply April–September; check current declarations before lighting a camp fire.
